Woodland's 65 Passes Rose to Take Open Lead
Saturday, June 15, 2019

Justin Rose was unable to keep it going in the second round of the U. S. Open yesterday, moving from 6 under to 7 under, and as a result, Gary Woodland took over the lead at Pebble Beach by two strokes. Woodland added a 6 under 65 to his opening round of 68 and is 9 under heading into moving day. Most of the marquee players made the cut, which came at 2 over par.

Of the top echelon players, Tony Finau, Ian Poulter, Justin Thomas, Alex Noren and Bubba Watson are the most notable who will sit out the weekend.

Louis Oosthuizen is alone in third place, three strokes behind Woodland, and Rory McIlroy is at 5 under. Matt Kuchar and Brooks Koepka are within range at 4 under. The group at 3 under, far from out of it,  includes Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Jon Rahm, Zach Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia, and Xander Schauffele.

After his 1-under 70 on Thursday, Tiger Woods was sailing along at 2 under after 16 holes Friday, having made one birdie and 15 pars. Coming to the hole No. 8, his 17th of the day, Tiger didn't have an over-par hole on his card since a double bogey on Thursday, a span of 20 holes. But bogeys on his last two holes, both par 4s, dropped him back to even par. Phil Mickelson had an up and down day and was at 1 under, along with Jordan Spieth.

Billy Horschel and Daniel Berger both made the cut at 1 over.
