Tyson Alexander: From Nowhere to Millionaire
Monday, January 16, 2023

Add Tyson Alexander's name to the long list of PGA Tour millionaires from Gatorland. There's Billy Horschel, Camilo Villegas, Brian Gay, Chris Couch, Chris DiMarco, Scott Dunlap, Mark Calcavecchia, etc., and now former long-time Florida coach Buddy Alexander's kid.

Tyson finished tied for 32nd yesterday at the Sony Open in Hawaii after rounds of 68-69-65-69-271, nine under par. He earned a check for $41,387, bringing his total to $1,012,534. He's made five of 10 cuts in his freshman season on the Tour, and his highlight was a second-place finish at the Houston Open, which netted him more than $900,000.

Tyson is entered again in this week's The American Express at the Pete Dye Stadium Course in La Quinta, California. The purse is $8 million. The only other Gator will be Gay, who has split his time - with success - between the PA Tour and Champions Tour since turning 50 last year.

Si Woo Kim won the Sony with an 18-under-par 262, one stroke better than Hayden Buckley, who could have tied with a birdie on 18, which he didn't make. Chris Kirk was third at 15 under. Kim earned $1,422,000, a little better than Hideki Matsuyama collected last year. Hideki tied for 48th this time and earned $20,250 with his 7-under-par 273.

Tyson made 19 birdies over the 72 holes and had only five bogeys after 54. But he made five more on Sunday, along with six birdies.
