Three Deadlocked at 9 Under Par in Sentry Tournament of Champions
Friday, January 6, 2023

The Plantation Course at Kapalua took a beating Thursday in the first round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, kicking off the 2023 schedule of the new 'look-alike' PGA Tour. It marked the Tour's first event in a month.

There's a three-way tie for the lead at 9-under-par 64 among Collin Morikawa, J. J. Spaun and Jon Rahm, all shooting for the major portion of the $15 million purse. Tom Kim is alone in fourth at 8 under, and there's a 6-way tie for fifth at 7 under, including Scottie Scheffler. There's another 6-way tie at 6 under, this one including Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, Viktor Hovland and Jordan Spieth.

The lone Gator in the field, Billy Horschel, experienced a tough day over the par-73 layout, shooting a 3-over-par 76. He's dead last in the 39-man field, the only player over par.

Morikawa's round included nine birdies, two on the front nine, then six in a row from 10 through 15, and another on the par-5 18th. It marks his lowest-ever round on the PGA Tour. Spaun made five birdies on the front and four on the back - from 12 through 15. Rahm had the lone bogey among the three, along with eight birdies and an eagle.
