Scheffler Holds 2-Stroke Lead After 54 Holes at TPC
Sunday, March 12, 2023

The conditions at TPC Sawgrass were better than perfect yesterday and the field took full advantage in the Players Championship.

Tom Hoge, who has one of the strangest 54-hole lines seen here in a while, broke the course record with a 10-under-par 62, besting the previous mark of 63 held by nine players. Hoge is tied for eighth with rounds of 78-68-62-208, and nobody would have given him a shot after Thursday's disaster.

Scottie Scheffler, who has won an incredible six times in the past 13 months, leads the pack at 14 under, and is even money to make it seven after adding a 7-under 65 to his opening 68-69. He holds a two-stroke edge over Min Woo Lee, who shot 66 while seeking his first PGA Tour victory, and four strokes over Cam Davis, whose 67 lifted him to 10 under.

There are four tied at 9 under, including Aaron Rai, who accomplished the nearly impossible on the final three holes - birdie 4, hole-in-one, birdie 3. There's a slew tied for 14th at 6 under, including Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Jason Day, who has put together a trio of 70s.

Gators Billy Horschel (+8) and Tyson Alexander (+9) missed the cut.
