Schauffele Defends Title at Travelers Championship
Thursday, June 22, 2023

Eleven of the top 12 on the FedEx Cup points list are vying for the major share of the elevated $20 million purse at the Travelers Championship beginning today in Cromwell, Connecticut. The event at TPC River Highlands is one of the oldest on the PGA Tour, dating back to 1952.

Xander Schauffele returns to defend his crown from last year; he finished at 19 under par, won by two strokes, and took home a healthy $1,494,000. He's currently 11th on the points list.

The others high on the list are 1. Jon Rahm; 2. Scottie Scheffler; 3. Max Homa; 4. U. S. Open winner Wyndham Clark; 5. Viktor Hovland; 6. Rory McIlroy; 7. Tony Finau; 9. Si Woo Kim; 10. Patrick Cantlay; 11. Xander Schauffele; 12. Jason Day. Only No. 8, Nick Taylor is missing.

Gator Tyson Alexander is back in action, he's No. 95 on the list in his first season on Tour, as are Brian Gay and Billy Horschel.

A surprise entrant is 39-year-old Brett Stegmaier, a former Gator who graduated from the Korn Ferry Tour and enjoyed some success for three years on the PGA Tour, before losing his card after the 2018 season.  Brett, a Connecticut native, became an assistant pro at Silver Spring Country Club, just 62 miles from Cromwell, and is back in the Travelers as the best of four qualifiers after shooting 6-under-66 on Monday. He's played just once in five years, at the 2022 Puerto Rico Open.
