Rowland Shoots 1-Under 71 in Des Moines; Horschel Grabs Lead at The Memorial

    Roger Rowland revved up his game a bit in the second round of the $1,850,000 Principal Charity Championship in Des Moines, adding a 1-under-par 71 to his opening-round 74 and he'll begin play in today's finale at 1 over, tied for 66th. 

    Roger began on the back nine and made eight pars along with a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole for a 35 going out. On the front, after making par on holes 1 through 5, he bogeyed the sixth to get back to even, then birdied the par-5 eighth to finish at 1 under. 

    Steven Alker shot 64 over the 6,959-yard Wakonda Club course to get to 13 under par, good for a deadlock on top with Brett Quigley (65-66), first-round leader Kirk Triplett (63-68) and Jerry Kelly (65-66), ensuring an exciting finish. Bernahrd Langer is right on their tails with 66-66-132, 12 under. 

    Gators: Mark Calcavecchia (70-68-138, 6 under, tied for 20th; Chris DiMarco (72-73-145, 1 over, tied with Roger; Scott Dunlap (74-72-145, 2 over, tied for 70th. Tom Lehman, architect of the Ocala Preserve course (68-72-140, 4 under) is tied for 34th, and Marco Dawson, former touring pro at Ocala's Adena Springs course (75-73-148, 4 over) is tied for 75th. 

  GATOR GROWL - Billy Horschel is back in business in the $12 million Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, and has taken the lead in the prestigious event hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Billy added a 7-under-65 at Muirfield Village Saturday and is at 13-under-par 203.

    He has a five-stroke edge over Aaron Wise and Cam Smith, both 8 under. Seminole Daniel Berger (70-72-67-209) is tied for fourth at 7 under with Francesco Molinari and Jonatthan Vega. Gator Camilo Villegas skied to a 78 and is tied for 68th at 7 over. Thirty-two players were over par Saturday in the remaining field of 70.
