Rowland's Champions Tour Debut Has Been Disappointing
Sunday, February 20, 2022

Roger Rowland's 2022 debut on the Champions Tour has proven to be surprisingly disappointing, and he heads into today's finale in the Chubb Classic in Naples mired in 77th place in a field of 79. Roger has posted rounds of 77-81-158, 14 over par at the Tiburon Golf Club.

The ex-Ocalan has made just four birdies over his first 36 holes - three on Friday and one on Saturday - and on the other end of the spectrum he's made 10 bogeys, one double and two triples. A change of fortune today can help him prepare for next week; he's entered in the $1.8 million Cologuard Classic in Tucson.

Bernhard Langer - surprise - leads the Chubb with rounds of 64-68-132, 12 under par. On Friday, he made five straight birdies on the back nine to forge into the lead. Scott Parel, who shot 64 yesterday, is tied for second at 10 under with Retief Goosen and Tim Petrovic. (Tim has one extra burden to overcome if he's going to win - he's a Boston Red Sox fan. I know this because more than a decade ago as I was following former Ocalan Brendan Pappas at the Deutsche Bank event in Boston, Petrovic jokingly chided me for daring to wear a New York Yankees hat on the course).

Among the ex-Gators, Brian Gay is best so far at 7 under par (tied for 7th) in his Champions debut, deadlocked with Scott Dunlap. Mark Calcavecchia is at 1 over, and Chris DiMarco is at plus 6. Tom Lehman, architect of the Ocala Preserve course on highway 27 is 2 under, and Marco Dawson, formerly touring pro at the now-defunct Adena Springs course on highway 441 north of Ocala, is 1 over.
