Potter Bolts Into Lead, Then Slips Back to Seventh
Saturday, April 22, 2017

Ted Potter took off like a rocket on the back nine of the United Leasing & Finance Championship yesterday, bolting into the lead after eight holes, but like a North Korean missile he quickly fell back to earth before play was mercifully halted due to darkness.

After his opening-round 1-under 71, Ted began day two with birdies at 10, 11, 14, 15 and 16 and was the on top of the leaderboard at 6 under as he teed off on No. 18. However, in the span of about 45 minutes, he bogeyed No. 18 and No. 1, then took a double bogey on the par-4 second. Suddenly, he was back to 2 under and in a tie for seventh when the horn sounded to suspend play.

That left Talor Gooch in the lead at 4 under as he was about to play No.12, with a logjam of five players at 3 under, including three who had finished their rounds - Jason Gore, Scott Gutschewski and Austin Cook.

GAY TIED FOR 17TH IN TEXAS - There's a tie at the top of the Valero Texas Open between Bud Cauley and Tony Finau at 8 under par, one stroke better than a quartet at 7 under.

Gator Brian Gay added an even-par 72 to his opening 68 and at 4 under is tied for 17th. One other Gator made the cut, which came at even par, as CamiloVillegas rebounded from his Thursday 73 for a 2-under 70 and is tied for 47th. Seminole Brooks Koepka made it to the weekend, too, with 68-74-142, 2 under. Missing the cut were Gators Billy Horschel (73-74), Matt Every (78-72) and Brett Stegmaier (75-78).
