Players Championship Returns After 2020 Cancellation
Wednesday, March 10, 2021

The coveted Players Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass tomorrow after the rich event was cancelled last year before the first round was completed. Hideki Matsuyama was sitting in the clubhouse with a 9-under-par 63, and he's back to see if he can do it again when it will count, against the customary loaded field.

Two of the marquee groups include Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth at 12:49, and Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson at 1 p. m.

Rory McIlroy will defend the title he won in 2019, earning him a check for $2,250,000. He won it by one over veteran Jim Furyk, who collected $1,350,000. This week's total purse money is a staggering $15 million.

Webb Simpson is back after his 2018 4-stroke victory, worth $1,980,000. He won by one over Charl Schwarzel, Jimmy Walker and Xander Schauffele.

Ted Potter played in 2019 by way of his victory in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am the year before, but he's not eligible this time around. He missed the cut of 1 under with a pair of 74's.

Florida's collegians are represented by Billy Horschel and Brian Gay for the Gators and Daniel Berger for the Seminoles. Brooks Koepka pulled out early due to injury.

Also in the fold are Phil Mickelson, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Sergio Garcia, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Viktor Hovland and Rickie Fowler.
