PGA Tour/LIV Merger Raises Many More Questions Than Answers
Wednesday, June 7, 2023

Announcement of the PGA Tour/LIV partnership stunned the golfing world yesterday, and instead of seemingly settling the differences between the two organizations, there aren't enough notebooks to hold all the questions that remain to be answered.

Here are a few of the more important:

(1) With players like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Ocala's Louis Oosthuizen and a few others having received astronomical money just to join the LIV, what will that mean for Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, etc. going forward? Will that group and many others be content to play alongside the zillionaires without now being included in the joining bonanza? Or, will the remaining PGA superstars have to be added to the million-dollar-plus bonus list?

(2) Will the players with integrity who opted not to accept the Saudi blood money - protesting human rights abuses, the 9/11 tragedy perpetrated by 19 terrorists who were found to be Saudis, and the murder and dismemberment of the Washington Post reporter - decline the invitation to join the new league, or will they fall in line due to the money involved?

(3) If there are PGA Tour players who decide to rebel, what will be their fate? Where will they play, in Europe or Asia, or form their own group and hope they can convince sponsors they are worth backing? Do they have enough money stashed away that they can afford to leave the Tour?

(4) After his cowardly move that has incensed so many, will commissioner Jay Monahan still be able to hold onto his high-paying job? Doubtful. Too many enemies.

(5) What will be the reaction of the paying public when it comes to on-site attendance? Will there be an outcry resulting in a major boycott of tournaments, or will the customers fall in line, too?

These are just a few of the immediate possibilities that crossed my mind - many, many more will crop up before this one is put to bed.
