Khozan Clinging to Freshman Sire Lead over Pharoah
Thursday, July 25, 2019

It was back on May 11 that Journeyman Stud's Khozan moved into first place on the North American first-crop sire list. That was 2 1/2 months ago, and the son of Distorted Humor has been on top ever since, waking up today with eight winners and $354,157 in progeny earnings.

It's anybody's guess when the Khozan euphoria will end, since the stallion most horsemen assumed would be the league leader on Dec. 31 - American Pharoah with his 162 foals - has moved up to second place with earnings of $344,971, and is only two winners behind.

Khozan has a chance to remain in the national battle if one or more of his winners show up in the soon-to-begin six races that make up the Florida Sire Stakes. The first two, the Dr. Fager for colts and geldings, and the Desert Vixen for fillies, are set for Aug. 3. Of course, by then American Pharoah may have taken over the lead.

Khozan still leads the Florida freshman group by a wide margin, and it's doubtful he can be caught, unless Ocala Stud's The Big Beast gets hot; but he has just two winners thus far.
