Gunnevera Misses Workout and Will Miss Woodward
Monday, August 12, 2019

HALLANDALE BEACH - Trainer Antonio Sano cancelled a planned workout for Gunnevera at Gulfstream Park West Sunday morning, ruling out a start in the Aug. 31 Gr. I Woodward at Saratoga.

Gunnevera, a multiple graded stakes-winner who has earned more than $5 million, had previously missed a planned start in the Aug. 3 Whitney at Saratoga with a bruised foot that had forced the cancellation of a pair of workouts. “His foot is fine. He just hasn’t come back as good as I want,” trainer Antonio Sano said. “The timing isn’t good for the Woodward.”

The $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 remains the ultimate goal for Margoth’s 5-year-old son of Dialed In, who finished second in the race last year at Churchill Downs.

Briannjenn Racing’s Addilyn ($2.60) brightened Sano’s day when the 2-year-old daughter of Palace Malice graduated by two lengths in a seven-furlong maiden special weight event in Sunday's second race.  The Kentucky-bred filly, who had finished second in her first two career starts while going 4 ½ furlongs and 6 furlongs, dominated her opposition under Edgard Zayas despite veering to the outside in mid-stretch. “She is a good filly. She’s still a little green,” Sano said.

J & G Stables LLC and Nicholas Vaccarezza’s Shell Shock, a daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, finished second behind Addilyn in her debut.
