Farmers Opening Round Resembles Dolphins' Old "No-Name Defense"
Thursday, January 26, 2023

After Jon Rahm saved the week for the marquee players with a 27-under-par performance in The American Express, things reverted to the Tour's present set of circumstances in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open yesterday at Torrey Pines.

Tied at the top with 8-under 64s are Brent Grant, Aaron Rai and Sam Ryder. They're one stroke ahead of Brendan Steele, and three ahead of some more familiar names - defending champ Luke List  and Collin Morikama. They're four ahead of a group of the "old-timers," if that's an appropriate term for Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Max Homa and Will Zalatoris.

New millionaire (Gator) Tyson Alexander is at even-par 72 and is two off the early cut line of -2, along with Rickie Fowler and Seminole Hank Lebioda. Rahm slumped to an opening 73 along with Tony Finau. Gator Camilo Villegas shot 3-over 75.

Tyson missed the 54-hole cut last week at 1 under par with rounds of 70-74-71-215.
