Derby Bash at Gulfstream Saturday

    HALLANDALE BEACH -  Gulfstream Park will play host to Florida’s largest Kentucky Derby party Saturday, May 4 with dining and drink specials, games, a fashion contest and watching and wagering on the 145th Run for the Roses.

     Gulfstream will offer $12 mint juleps in souvenir Derby glasses throughout the property Saturday. There will also be a horse racing raffle, fashion show, photo booth and cornhole games. The Flamingo Room will offer a $39 plus tax food buffet and $25 unlimited champagne. Ten Palms will have an enhanced buffet with a seafood station, three carving stations plus at least 10 hot items for $75 per person plus tax.

     Gulfstream’s doors open at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. First race post at Churchill Downs is 10:30 a.m. both days. Gulfstream’s first race on Friday is 1 p.m. and Saturday 12:30 a.m. There will be advance wagering on Saturday’s 14-race Derby program on Friday.

     The Derby will have several horses who raced or wintered at Gulfstream including Florida Derby winner Maximum Security, who will attempt to become the 60th Florida Derby starter to win a Triple Crown event and the 25th to win the Kentucky Derby.

     Other horses running in Saturday’s Derby who campaigned at Gulfstream are Fountain of Youth winner Code of Honor and third-place finisher Vekoma, the Todd Pletcher-trained Cutting Humor, who broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park West and finished second in an allowance optional claimer in his 3-year-old debut in January and, Country Home, who won his 3-year-old debut in January for trainer Bill Mott. Florida Derby runner-up Bodexpress will run but only if one of the top 20 contenders scratches before the race.
