Burns Repeats in Valspar; Oosthuizen and Potter in Action This Week
Monday, March 21, 2022

After opening with rounds of 67-68 at the Valspar Championship in Innisbrook, Louis Oosthuizen stumbled over the weekend, adding a 3-over-par 74 on Saturday and a 2-over-73 on Sunday, and finished at 2 under, tied for 62nd. He collected a meager check of $17,004, which just about paid for his gas on the return home from Palm Harbor. He's in 129th place on the money list with earnings of $417,772 for the seven events he has played.

The statistics told the story for the usually reliable Louis - he made just two birdies on Sunday, along with four bogeys, (14 and 12 for the 72 holes). All week, he hit just 32 of 52 fairways, and 46 of 72 greens.

Sam Burns made it two straight over the Copperhead course at Innisbrook, defeating Davis Riley with a birdie on their second playoff hole after they had tied at 17 under. Burns won by passing Davis with a Sunday 69, while Davis posted a 72. He also held off two 16-under foes, Justin Thomas, who shot 70, and Matt NeSmith, who closed with 71.

Seminole Brooks Koepka finished with a 6-under-65 and moved all the way up to a tie for 12th at 11 under.

The Tour moves to Austin, Texas for the $12 million, 64-man WGC-Dell Technologies beginning Wednesday at the Austin Country Club. Gator Billy Horschel is the defending champ - he collected $1,820,000 last time out. John Rahm is the No. 1 seed in the left bracket, and Collin Morikawa is No. 2 in the right bracket. Also in the top 10 in the left are Patrick Cantlay (No. 4), Scottie Scheffler (5), Dustin Johnson (8) and Bryson DeChambeau (10). After Morikawa come Viktor Hovland (3), Justin Thomas (6), Louis (10) and Xander Schauffele (7). Koepka is the 16th seed and Horschel is No. 12. Seminole Daniel Berger is No. 17.

The satellite tournament beginning Thursday is the $3.7 million Corales Puntacana Championship at the Corales Golf Course Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Ted Potter returns for this one, along with Seminole Hank Lebioda and Gator Camilo Villegas.
