Birdies Flying in Illinois, Potter's Tied for Seventh
Sunday, June 25, 2017

Birdies were flying at the Lincoln Land Charity Championship yesterday, and Ted Potter made enough of them to remain in the top 10, but not enough to be within realistic striking distance of leader Kyle Thompson.

Thompson began the day at 10 under and shot his second straight 7-under 64 at the Panther Creek Country Club to get it to 17 under, good for a two-stroke lead over Adam Schenk and second-round leader Tom Whitney. But Wes Roach emphasized how birdies were there for the taking, posting a 9-under 62 and moving up 39 spots into fourth place at 14 under.

Ted began the day at 9 under and made five birdies of his own, but two bogeys kept him from remaining in the top four. He shot 3-under 68, moved to 12 under and is tied for seventh. He tees off at 11:56 today, in the third group from the end.

Seminole Jack Maguire goes into the finale at 2 under, tied for 77th.

SPIETH LOOKING GOOD - At the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., Jordan Spieth holds a one-stroke edge over Boo Weekley after a 4-under 66 put him at 12 under par. Daniel Berger is looking to keep alive the recent hot streak by Seminoles and Gators; he's all alone in third at 9 under.

Gator Matt Every has found new life and is tied for 28th with rounds of 66-72-69-207, and Brett Stegmaier is in the same group after rounds of 64-72-71. Brian Gay missed the cut with a pair of 72s.

NO LONGER LANGER - It's a different type of leaderboard at the Champions Tour's American Family Insurance Championship in Madison, Wisconsin, with Paul Broadhurst taking a two-stroke lead heading into today's finale at the University Ridge Golf Club. Broadhurst's 63-69-132 is 12 under par, and Lee Janzen and Scott Verplank are at 10 under.

Fred Couples, Gene Sauers and Steve Stricker are all in the hunt at 9 under. Gator Scott Dunlap is tied for 21st at 5 under, and Marc Calcavecchia is tied for 34th at 3 under, same as Adena pro Marco Dawson.

RYU RUNNING AWAY IN ARKANSAS - So Yeon Ryu will be tough to catch in the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship, and only Stacy Lewis and Moriya Jutanugarn have a slim chance of doing it. Ryu shot a record-breaking 61 Saturday after her opening 65 and is 16 under par in the 54-hole event. Lewis and Jutanugarn are tied for second at 11 under.

Michelle Wie, who graces the top of this page, is tied for 10th at 6 under after a pair of 68s, and Gator Sandra Gal is at 5 under (71-66).
