Itsmyluckycharm Returns to Winning Form

Her streak of five straight first-place finishes broken in the Honey Ryder last time out, Itsmyluckycharm returned to winning form at Friday, romping to a six-length triumph in the $75,000 Portofino Bay Stakes.

Trained by Eddie Plesa Jr. for his wife, Laurie, Itsmyluckycharm received a ground-saving trip under Albin Jimenez to prevail over five rivals in the seven-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies that was transferred from the turf course to the sloppy main track. “She sat pretty good for me. When I saw the horse in front of me going out, I saw a big hole, so I said, ‘Why not?’ Jimenez said. “She was just waiting for me to ask her.”

Itsmyluckycharm, the 6-5 favorite, settled a few lengths off pacesetter Jolie Bay, who was pressed by Sweet Hitch Hiker and stalked on the outside by Devious Charm. Jolie Bay showed the way into the stretch while drifting to the outside, providing Itsmyluckycharm more than enough room to launch her winning drive. Devious Charm edged Sweet Hitch Hiker for second.

The versatile Itsmyluckycharm, a daughter of the Plesa-trained Itsmyluckyday, registered her sixth career victory and third on a dirt surface while running seven furlongs in 1:23.25. Prior to the Honey Ryder, she won four straight races before finishing first and being disqualified for interference.
