Alexander and Horschel Set for $7.9 Million Sony Open in Hawaii
Wednesday, January 11, 2023

The first full field PGA tournament of the year begins tomorrow in Honolulu - the Sony Open In Hawaii, and Hideki Matsuyama will be defending the title he won last year in a playoff. Hideki collected $1,350,000 of the $7.5 million purse after shooting 23-under par 257 on the par-70 Waialae Country Club course. He'll have a chance to earn more this time since the purse has been raised to $7.9 million.

There are two Gators entered, one veteran - Billy Horschel - and one rookie, Tyson Alexander. Billy is 83rd on the FedEx points list and has earned $543,755. In his career, he's taken home a cool $33,915,589. Last year, he shot 11 under par and collected $35,700.

Tyson, who has moved to the Jacksonville area, still plays out of Gainesville; he's already ensured his future after finishing second in the Houston Open and running up a bank account of $971,147. He's made four of nine cuts and is 25th on the FedEx list.

Billy tees off at 8 a. m. on No. 10 with Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson. Tyson goes in the last group at 1:40, also from No.10.

Gator Camilo Villegas is on the alternate list, but so far down it's doubtful he'll make it.
