Potter Gets Another Chance in Puerto Rico
Tuesday, February 28, 2023

Ted Potter and a slew of notable former exempt PGA Tour stalwarts get a chance to change their status this week at the Puerto Rico Open, while the A listers ply their trade at the Arnold Plamer Invitational at Bay Hill.

The Bay Hill group will play for a cool $20 million, while the hopefuls go for $3.8 million east of Miami, every one looking to regain his former standing. The field includes a long list of ex-A listers, including Chad Campbell, K. J. Choi, Daniel Chopra, Ben Crane, Jason Dufner, Carlos Franco, Robert Gamez, Bill Haas, J. J. Henry, Richard Johnson, Frank Lickliter, Sean O'Hair, Geoff Ogilvy, D. A. Points, D. J. Trajan, Duffy Waldorf, Boo Weekley, and, of course, Ted Potter.

Ted hasn't made a cut in a blue moon, and many of the others haven't played a Tour event in quite a while, so this one at the Grand Reserve Golf Club can drastically alter their upcoming schedule in the short space of 72 holes. Last year, Ted missed the cut after going 13 over par.

Ex-Gators Matt Every and Camilo Villegas will be in Puerto Rico, as will Seminole Hank Lebioda. Last year, Ryan Brehm won it at 20 under par, and took home $666,000. This week, he'll be playing for a great deal more in Windermere. Chris Kirk, who won the Honda Classic Sunday in a one-hole playoff over Eric Cole when Cole dumped his second shot in the water on No. 18, will be back at Bay Hill, as will Gator Tyson Alexander, who is now exempt after a recent re-shuffle. Tyson had a disappointing outing at Honda with rounds of 70-70-75-71-286, 6 over par, and earned $15,876. That raised his bank account for the season to $1,051,232, and he's in 54th place on the money list.

Cole gets in on a sponsor's exemption, and Gator Billy Horschel will try to find his game after several mediocre outings. Scottie Scheffler is the defending champ, but with a loaded field, it won't be easy.
