Triple Bogey on 18 Disastrous for Potter
Sunday, May 9, 2021

Ted Potter took a triple bogey 7 on his final hole at the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday, finishing with a 5-over-par 76 and basically killing his chances for a big slice of the $8.1 million pie.

Ted was by no means alone in not being able to solve the par-71 Quail Hollow Club course in Charlotte, N. C. Among the major casualties, and there were many, Patrick Rodgers followed up his pair of 68s, which had him squarely in contention at 6 under, with an 8-over 79, and Phil Mickelson, after a 7-under 64 and 75, added a 76 and also plummeted into the bottom 25 in the field off 77.

Keith Mitchell wasn't among the plummeters, forging a 5-under 66, low round of the afternoon, and he took over the top spot at 9 under par. Rory McIlroy's 68 and Gary Woodland's 70 left them both at 7 under, tied for second, and Luke List, with a 68, is alone in fourth at 6 under.

Ted made four birdies in round 3, but six bogeys and the triple buried him. He continued his inability of  late to keep his tee shots on the fairway, hitting just 7 of 14, which led to his hitting just 7 of 18 greens. Still, he was only 1 over after a birdie on 10, but he went four over on the last 8 holes. The paychecks for the bottom group after today's finale will be in the $16,000 range, still not too bad for four day's work.

Seminole Hank Lebioda joined the plummet group with a 77 and is 7 over par.
