Sam Burns Leads Genesis Invitational at 7-Under
Friday, February 19, 2021

The trend of ever-changing leaders on the PGA Tour continued in the opening round of the Genesis Invitational yesterday at Riviera Country Club with Sam Burns taking the top spot with a 7-under-par 64. Burns holds a two-stroke edge over Max Homa and Matthew Fitzpatrick, and three over a group of eight at 4 under that includes Patrick Cantlay, Alex Noren and Scottie Scheffler.

Aside from Cantlay, among the marquee players within hailing distance are Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson at 3 under 68. The early projected cut is at even par.

The story of the day was provided by Tae Hoon Kim, who made a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole, earning him a new car from Genesis. Amazingly, it was the third time the South Korean has taken home a Genesis-sponsored car in a little more than four months. He earned one by winning the 2020 Genesis Championship on the Korean Tour, and another by leading the Order of Merit on the Korean Tour.

Gators Camilo Villegas (71) and Brian Gay (72) are still in the mix, but Seminole Daniel Berger bowed out before the start of play.
