Rahm Tests Positive and Withdraws at The Memorial
Sunday, June 6, 2021

Jon Rahm received the bad news as he was finishing up his third round at the Memorial: he had tested positive for the virus. He was 18 under at the time after completing an 8-under 64, including a hole-in-one, and was a cinch to take home the $1.7 million check today. Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay were next at 12 under, and the way Rahm is playing the duo would still be battling for second money.

But Rahm had to withdraw from the event that he won last year (with a check for $1,674,000) and he was very gracious about it. One can afford to be gracious about losing a million-plus if there are many more millions in the bank.

Personally, I think they could have let Jon play by himself today - he's not sick and he's asymptomatic - with he and his caddie masked, and keeping the crowd away from both. But, that's life.

Imagine the ramifications if it was some young player fighting for his golfing and financial life, instead of Rahm.

As it is, Morikawa and Cantlay have it mostly to themselves, with Branden Grace and Scottie Scheffler tied for third at 9 under. It's another three strokes back to Max Homa, who is 6 under and would have to have a record round to win.

They will be talking about this one for a long time.
