Potter's 68 Right On Sony Cut Line
Friday, January 15, 2021

Ted Potter's Ocala following will have to stay up late tonight to find out if he makes his first cut of the wrap-around season at the $6.6 million Sony Open in Hawaii. After posting a 2-under-par 68 in round 1 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Ted is tied for 55th, right on the cut line, and he doesn't tee off today until 12:40 Hawaii time, which is 5:40 EST, meaning he won't finish until about 10 o'clock tonight

Ted had his best 'greens-in-regulation' round in quite some time, hitting 15 of 18, and it translated into six birdies. But he added four bogeys to dash his chances of finishing closer to leaders Peter Malnati, Jason Kokrak and Joaquin Niemann, deadlocked at the top after 8-under 62's on the par-70 layout.

A slow start on the greens put Ted behind the 8-ball on the first two holes. He missed a 5-foot putt for par on No. 1, and a 3-footer for birdie on No. 2, those two alone keeping him from being 4 under and a great deal safer as far as the cut line is concerned. But he made birdie putts of 3 feet 3 inches and 9 feet, 4 inches on the next two holes to get back in the game. He wound up making six birdies and four bogeys, and posted two nines of 34.

There's a group of six tied for fourth at 6-under 64, including Seminole Daniel Berger. Among the Gators, Billy Horschel is tied for 10th at 5 under, and Matt Every and Brian Gay are in a tie for 40th at 3 under. Seminole Hank Lebioda has some work to do after a 2-over 72.

The seniors are all still in the ballpark, with Jerry Kelly and Mike Weir at 68, and Jim Furyk, Davis Love III and Vijay Singh shooting 69.
