Potter Succumbs to Final Hole at Palmetto Championship in S. C.
Friday, June 11, 2021

Ted Potter will be playing for practice today at the $7.3 million Palmetto Championship at Congaree in South Carolina after knocking himself out of contention on Thursday's final hole

Starting on the back nine yesterday, Ted was sitting at 2 under par after making birdie on the third hole, his 12th hole of the day. But he took a double  bogey on the par-5 4th, and a bogey on the par-3 5th, to drop to 1 over with four to play. He parred the next three holes, but No. 9 became a disaster, when, after driving it 304 yards to the left fairway, he hit his second shot into a "native area" and couldn't get out even though he was just 33 feet, 2 inches to the hole. After a series of shots that got him nowhere, he finally holed a 1-foot putt for a 5-over-par 9, and a final 77, 6 over par.

Wes Roach took the first-round lead with a 7-under 64, one stroke ahead of a group of four at 65 which include Chesson Hadley, Erik van Rooyen, Doc Redman and Dustin Johnson. Jhonattan Vegas is alone at 66 and there are a slew at 4-under 67. The early projected cut was at even-par 71.

The only Seminole or Gator under the cut line is Hank Lebioda, at 3-under 68. The other Seminole, Brooks Koepka, is at 1-over 72, same as Gator Brian Gay. The other Gators: Camilo Villegas, 2-over 73; Matt Every, 3-over 74.
