Potter Saves First Round at Wells Fargo With 2 Late Birdies
Friday, May 7, 2021

Ted Potter saved the first round of the $8.1 million Wells Fargo Championship from getting out of hand yesterday with birdies on the 15th and 18th holes, winding up right on the early projected cut line of even-par 71.

After making two bogeys on the front nine without a birdie at the Quail Hollow Club course in Charlotte, Ted had gotten it back to even par with birdies on 10 and 13, but negated them with a double bogey on 14. But he righted the ship with the two late birdies, and is tied for 51st with 15 others heading into round 2.

Phil Mickelson made five birdies on the back nine to complete a round of 32-32-64, seven under par, to take a two-stroke lead over red-hot Keegan Bradley and Kyoung-Hoon Lee. There are six tied at 4-under 67, including Tommy Fleetwood and Gary Woodland.
