Potter Keeps on Trucking at Torrey Pines This Week
Tuesday, January 26, 2021

After missing the cut despite shooting 1-under-par at The American Express, Ted Potter remains in California for this week's Farmers Insurance Open to be played at the famed Torrey Pines South course.

Ted has now missed the cut in all seven events he has played in the wrap-around season since the Safeway Open in September; he has been under par in four of the seven. His problems can easily be detected by perusing the stats column - he's only hit 160 of 252 greens, and 107 of 194 fairways. This is an important year for Ted since his exemption derived from winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2018 runs out after the season.

The Torrey Pines event has brought out more marquee players than have been competing in recent events, which have been dominated by the long-hitting younger PGA stars. Marc Leishman, who won it last year, returns to defend the title which netted him a cool $1,350,000, and he'll be joined by Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Jason Day, Jon Rahm, Adam Scott, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Si Woo Kim, who won The American Express on Sunday with a 23 under total.

Kim defeated Patrick Cantlay by one stroke after Cantlay finished early in the afternoon at 22 under, posting a final-round 61. But Kim finished strong as well, putting up an 8-under 64. Cameron Davis was third at 20 under, followed by Finau at 19 under.

FSU's Hank Lebioda faltered at the end with a closing 76 and tied for 62nd at 2 under; he was the only Seminole or Gator to make  the cut. That two-school group will be prominent this week, with Lebioda and Brooks Koepka representing the Seminoles and Matt Every, Billy Horschel and Camilo Villegas on board for the Gators.
