Potter Goes Again in California; Na Wins Sony By One
Monday, January 18, 2021

Ted Potter will try to break his current losing streak in the American Express this week at PGA West's Stadium course in La Quinta, Ca. After missing the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, Ted has not made it to the weekend in all five PGA Tour events he has entered in the wrap-around season.

A watered-down field will be on hand for the $6.7 million event, although Phil Mickelson returns to make it interesting, along with veterans Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Charles Howell III, Zach Johnson, Gary Woodland, Francesco Molinari and Patrick Reed.

Among the old-timers, Steve Stricker is aboard and Steve Jones will be making a rare appearance. Seminoles Brooks Koepka and Hank Lebioda will compete, along with Gators Brian Gay and Camilo Villegas; Matt Every is the fourth alternate, already having moved up from No. 6.

Andrew Landy is the defending champ - he struck for $1,206,000 last year.

Gay disappointed with a 72nd (of 73) finish yesterday in Hawaii, but Gator Billy Horschel and Seminole Daniel Berger played well, tying for seventh at 18 under par. Horschel closed with 65 and Berger 66.

Kevin Na shot 65 Sunday to win the event at 21 under par, and collect the $1,888,000 first prize. He defeated reborn Chris Kirk and red-hot Joaquin Niemann by one stroke. Kirk has returned after a bout with alcoholism and was playing on a major medical extension. He needed to finish in the top three to regain his exempt status, and he did it by winding up with a 5-under 65, making birdies on seven of the final 13 holes.
