Eureka! Ted Potter's streak of missed cuts came to a screeching halt at Torrey Pines yesterday when he added a 3-under-par 69 to his opening 71 on the North Course, and at 4-under 140 rests in a tie for 21st place in the Farmers Insurance Open, up 48 spots from Thursday.
Ted is just five strokes behind leader Viktor Hovland, whose 70-65-135 is 9 under par, one stroke ahead of a menacing group that includes Jon Rahm, Adam Scott, Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, Lanto Griffin and Ryan Palmer. Hovland also moved up 48 spots with his 7-under round.
Ted made three birdies and two bogeys for 35 on the back nine, then added three birdies and one bogey on the front for 34 and his 3-under round. He was well under the cut line, which came at 1 under. After seven straight missed cuts, Ted has a chance to pick up a substantial check in the $7.5 million event, in which even 20th place carries a payoff nearing $100,000.
All the Gators and Seminoles missed the cut, Matt Every with 76-70 and Billy Horschel with 76-69, Hank Lebioda with 73-71 and Brooks Koepka with 72-76. Camilo Villegas withdrew after an opening 80.
Ted goes off today at 11:30 a. m. (EST) in the company of Lucas Glover and Wyndham Clark.
