Mickelson Becomes Oldest Winner of a Major - Ever
Monday, May 24, 2021

One of the most relevant facets repeated often during the final round of the PGA Championship yesterday was that there were five two-stroke swings between Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka before Phil achieved several milestones with his second victory in the event.

In no particular order, Phil became the oldest player ever to win a Major - he turns 51 next month; Julius Boros had held the honor since 1968 when he won the same event at the age of 48. It was Phil's sixth victory in a Major, first since the 2013 Open, and his 45th Tour victory.

On another difficult day over the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, Phil closed with 73 for a 6-under-par 282, two strokes ahead of Brooks Koepka, who shot 74, and Louis Oosthuizen, who shot 73 while partnered with Phil. And, in one of the more interesting notes of the day, Ian Baker Finch casually mentioned that Oosthuizen has just purchased a horse farm in Ocala. (More on that when further information is available).

In the post-game interview, Phil mused that he may never win again - but nobody believes that. He thrilled the thousands of fans who followed him from the start with many of his famed near-impossible feats, including a hole-out from a greenside bunker for a birdie on the par-3 fifth.

Koepka tied for second while looking for his third PGA Championship victory in four years, but fellow Seminole Daniel Berger, usually one of the steadiest players on Tour, finished at 10 over par after a Sunday 76 and tied for 75th. Gator Billy Horschel tied for 23rd at 1 over with a closing 72 and Brian Gay was 18 over after a 78 and finished 81st and last.
