Hovland Rallies to Win Mayakoba Golf Classic
Monday, December 7, 2020

Viktor Hovland is one of the brightest young stars on the PGA Tour, and he outlasted a huge group of Sunday's low scorers to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic by one stroke over Aaron Wise, who closed with 63. Hovland won the event in Playa del Carmen, Mexico with a 20-under-par 264, posting a final-round 65.

Emiliano Grillo, who looked like a cinch after opened a four-stroke lead after 36 holes wound up Friday, tanked in the finale, shooting 1-over 72 and dropping into a tie for eighth at 15 under.

Adam Long's 67 put him in a third-place tie with Tom Hoge (69) at 17 under, one ahead of fifth-place Harris English (63), Gator Billy Horschel (64) and Lucas Glover (66).

Amateur Austin Eckroat was in the hunt from the start and finished in a tie for 12th at 14 under. Seminole Daniel Berger tied for 23rd at 11 under and Gator Camilo Villegas tied for 32nd at 9 under.

This week the players travel to Naples for the invitation-only QBE Shootout at Tiburon Golf Course. Last year's event was won by Rory Sabbatini and Kevin Tway, who split $435,000.
