Double Bogey Stalls Potter at The American Express
Friday, January 22, 2021

Another of his disastrous double bogeys has put Ted Potter in jeopardy of missing the cut in the $6.7 million American Express being played over two courses at PGA West in La Quinta, Ca. Ted has missed five cuts in a row and his even-par 72 over the Stadium Course in Thursdays' opening round left him two short of the cut line of minus 2.

Ted began on the back nine and, as has happened so often in recent events, he bogeyed his first hole. But a string birdies on 13, 14 and 16 lifted him to 2 under, before another bogey on 18 led him to a 1-under 35 at the halfway point.

Ted then made par on the first six holes on the front nine, until he was derailed by his old nemesis, taking a six on the par-4 seventh. A birdie on No. 9 got him back to even par, two strokes short of the cut line.

Brandon Hagy is the leader after an opening 8-under-par 64 over the Nicklaus Tournament course, and he's one stroke better than Byeong Hun An and two better than Martin Laird, Mark Homa and Si Woo Kim, who is paired with Ted for the first two rounds.

The players who are sitting on the 2-under cut line are tied for 61st, and there are 30 in that category.

The Seminoles: Hank Lebioda (SC), 69, 3 under, tied for 39th; Brooks Koepka (NT), 72, even, tied for 103rd. Gators: Camilo Villegas (SC), 69, tied for 39th; Brian Gay (NT), 74, 2 over; Matt Every, who had to wait all week before moving up from sixth place on the alternate list, should have stayed home - he shot 12-over-84 on the Nicklaus Tounament course.
