English Wins T of C in Playoff; Potter Returns for Sony Open This Week
Monday, January 11, 2021

After Harris English defeated Joaquin Niemann yesterday with a birdie on the first playoff hole to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, the PGA Tour remains in Hawaii this week for the first full field event of the 2021 season, the $6.6 million Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club.

Ted Potter will make his first start since the RSM Classic in November, attempting to halt a five-event skid during which he has hasn't made a cut, beginning with the Safeway Open in September. Ted has earned more than $6.5 million since joining the tour nearly 10 years ago and will be looking to cash his first check this season in Honolulu.

Florida and FSU players will be on hand in abundance, with Billy Horschel, Brian Gay and Matt Every representing the Gators and Daniel Berger and Hank Lebioda carrying the hopes of the Seminoles. Berger wasn't able to get it going Sunday in Kapalua, winding up tied for 10th at 19 under after a final-round 1-under-par 72. Horschel tied for 24th at 14 under, closing with a 2-over 75, and Gay tied for 29th at 13 under after a 2-under 71.

English, who went into Sunday tied for first at 21 under, shot a 4-under 69 to wind up deadlocked with Niemann, who was on fire in the finale with a 9-under 64. Niemann began the day tied for seventh, five shots behind English and Ryan Palmer, who was only able to muster up a 2-under 71 and finished fourth at 23 under. Justin Thomas, who began four strokes back, posted a final 66 and wound up all alone in third at 24 under, just one stroke behind the playoff duo.

This week's event has brought out a group of the elderly, including Mike Weir, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk and Jerry Kelly.
