Potter Heads for Puerto Rico; Homa wins Genesis
Monday, February 22, 2021

Ted Potter will return to the Puerto Rico Open Thursday in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, looking to improve on his excellent showing from last year when he finished in a tie for sixth.

Ted posted rounds of 68-70-67-69-274, 14 under par, trailing winner Viktor Hovland by six strokes. Hovland will not defend his title at the Grand Reserve Country Club since he'll be playing in the $10.5 million World Golf Championship event in Bradenton. He collected a check for $540,000 last year from the total purse of $3 million.

There will be several other PR Open winners in the field though, trying to recapture some former glory, including Martin Trainer (2009), George McNeil (2012), Scott Brown (2013), Alex Cejka (2015) and D. A. Points (2017). The tournament wasn't played in 2018.

Two Gators are in the field, Matt Every and venerable Chris Couch, who turns 48 on May 1 and no doubt savoring a shot at the Champions Tour in 2023.

DUSTIN OR MAX? - Late tuners-in to the Genesis Invitational yesterday may have thought they were watching Dustin Johnson but they would have been mistaken. The Dustin-lookalike is Max Homa, who rebounded from a short missed putt on the 18th hole to defeat Tony Finau on the second extra hole.

After birdieing the par-5 17th hole, Homa came to the final hole tied with Finau at 12 under, and lofted his second shot just 3 feet, 4 inches from the hole. Finau was on the driving range in case of a playoff, and he got his wish when Homa's putt veered off to the left and rimmed the cup.

They both parred No. 10, and Homa won it on the par-3 14th when Finau was unable to make his par. Sam Burns finished one back when he could only muster up a 2-under 69 in the finale. Dustin lost his shot with a Sunday 72.

Seminole Brooks Koepka tied for 38th at even par, and Gator Brian Gay tied for 60th at 4 over.
