Tiger's No. 2 Scenario Doesn't Help CBS
Saturday, July 18, 2020

The worst scenario that can befall CBS is for Tiger Woods to miss the 36-hole cut in any PGS Tour event and be heading home when the low 65 and ties are playing round 3 on Saturday. The second worst is for Tiger to barely make the cut and wind up teeing off at 8 a. m. on Saturday, long before the TV audience gets involved and has to settle for some canned highlights

Scenario No. 2 is what CBS has been forced to settle for today in The Memorial at Muirfield Village after Tiger had to make two late birdies just to make it on the cut line of plus 3. After his so-so round of 71 on Thursday, Tiger was way off the mark yesterday and his recurring back problems were evident. He came to his final three holes on the front nine at 6 over par for the day and 5 over for his first 33 holes. But he was able to make birdies on the seventh and eighth, parred the ninth, then had a long wait to make sure the cut line wasn't going to move to plus 2 late in the day. It didn't.

Ryan Palmer, who missed the cut on the same course in the Workday Open the previous week, is tied for the lead with Tony Finau at the halfway point after rounds of 67-68-135, 9 under par. Finau shot 66-69. Jon Rahm is third with 69-67-136, 8 under. Among players who were in jeopardy after poor beginnings, Matt Kuchar made a big move with a 67 following his opening 76 and is tied for 26th, Bubba Watson survived with 78-68-146 and is tied for 47th, and Xander Schauffele barely made it with 78-69, 3 over.

Gator Billy Horschel also made it right on the cut line, as did Seminole Brooks Koepka. Seminole Daniel Berger missed it by one stroke. Rickie Fowler made a valiant comeback effort after a Thursday 81, but his 68 left him two strokes short.
