Tiger 8 Behind at Hero World Challenge
Saturday, December 1, 2018

Everybody is under par after two rounds of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas - Tiger's event that the press crucified him for several years ago, when he won and they called it a "hand-picked field." Yes, it was hand-picked, and it still is, with 18 of the top players in the world competing at the par-72 course in Albany, Providence. There are no marginal players in this one.

Tiger, however, wound up 36 holes eight strokes behind leaders Jon Rahm (71-63-134, 10 under par) and Henrik Stenson (68-66-134).

Tiger shot 1-over 73 in round 1, plagued by a triple-bogey 6 on the par-3 12th hole. Without that, he would have had a 2-under 70 and still been in contention. He made four birdies during the round.

Yesterday, he finally had it going, making five birdies and no bogeys for 17 holes, until he hit it under a bush on No. 18. When he tried to chip it out on the fairway, he barely made progress, and a controversy arose when officials tried to determine if he had hit the ball twice. TV slow-mo was inconclusive and he wasn't assessed a penalty, but he took a double-bogey 6 and a 67 quickly turned into 69.

At 2 under, Tiger would have to go crazy to approach the leaders, but Jason Day is even worse - at 1 under.
