Shinnecock Wins Round 1 at the Open
Friday, June 15, 2018

Round 1 of the U. S. Open - The field vs. Shinnecock Hills - went to the latter yesterday as many of the pre-tournament favorites left themselves so far behind the leaders they may not make it to the weekend.

There is a tie for the lead at 1 under among Russell Henley, Dustin Johnson, Scott Piercy and Ian Poulter, with Jason Dufner next at even-par 70, but the list of disappointing players is formidable. It includes: Rickie Fowler (73), Justin Thomas (74), Sergio Garcia (75), Bubba Watson (77), Phil Mickelson (77), Tiger Woods (78), Jordan Spieth (78) and Rory McIlroy (80).

Ted Potter's round was no better - he made three birdies, seven bogeys and one double for 6-over 76. That was after beginning with a 10-footer for a birdie on No. 10. After four holes, Ted was still 1 under and tied for the lead. It was all downhill after that.

Grian Gay shot 75, as did Brooks Koepka, and Daniel Berger 76.
