Scheffler Puts Finishing Touches on Sunday for Masters Victory
Monday, April 11, 2022

Scottie Scheffler was leading at 8 under par after two rounds at The Masters. He only made it to 10 under by late Sunday afternoon, but it was more than enough to give him his fourth victory in his last six events and a stranglehold on the title of No. 1 player in the world.

Scheffler's 69-67-71-71-278 was three better than Rory McIlroy's 281, which was highlighted by the lowest round of the week - an 8-under, bogey-free 64 on Sunday that propelled him into second place by himself. It was the only bogey-free round of the week and featured four birdies on the front nine and two birdies and an eagle on the back.

Shane Lowry and Cam Smith tied for third at 5 under, and Cam can pin-point three holes out of 72 that cost him the title. On Thursday he made double bogeys on 1 and 18, and yesterday he made a triple - that's 7 over par - and he lost by five.

Tiger Woods began with 71 and looked like his torn-up leg wasn't going to be a problem. But his limp went from bad to worse over the next three days and he wound up with 74-78-78 for 301, 13 over par. It's a good bet we won't see him for a while - watching Tiger trudge up hills and down proved to be very telling.

Gator Billy Horschel improved on his 74-73-78 first three rounds with a final 2-under 70 and he tied for 43rd. Seminole Daniel Berger couldn't solve Augusta National after a Thursday 71, adding 75-77-80 for 15-over 303, tied for 50th.

TYSON DEFENDS - The Korn Ferry Tour goes to Arlington, Texas this week for the Veritex Bank Championship (Wednesday-Saturday) and Gator Tyson Alexander of Gainesville will defend the title he won last year. Also entered is Dan McCarthy, two-time winner of the Ocala Open at Candler Hills.
