Safeway Champ Could Be Named Champ Today
Sunday, September 29, 2019

Unless Justin Thomas shoots the lights out, the parade of Young Turks winning PGA events should continue today at the Safeway Open in Napa, California. Cameron Champ can become a champ again; he's sailing along at 14-under-par 202 (67-68-67) and all he has to do is repeat any of those rounds and he'll be home free.

Sebastian Munoz, Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor are tied for second at 11 under, while Thomas is tied at 10 under with Chez Reavie, Colin Morikawa and Nick Watney. So, if Thomas doesn't shoot eight or nine under, one of the Turks will keep their streak going. Ironically, the last two winners of the Sanderson Farms Championship, Champ and Munoz, will be in today's final group.

Among the others high on the board are Gator Brian Gay (70-67-70-207) and Charles Howell III at 9 under, and Seminole Daniel Berger and Bryson DeChambeau at 8 under. Veterans Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Francesco Molinari are at 7 under. Seminole Hank Lebioda is tied for 47th at 3 under.

The cut came at 2 under, and among those missing it were Kevin Na, Emiliano Grillo, Charley Hoffman, Gator Matt Every (76-70), Fred Couples, John Daly and amateur Tony Romo (70-78).

The Tour heads for Las Vegas next week for the $7.5 million Shriners Hospital for Children at TPC Summerlin and Ted Potter will be back for this one.
