Potter's Woes Continue at Honda; Tiger Shoots 70
Friday, February 23, 2018

Ted Potter's woes at last week's Genesis Open on the west coast continued into yesterday's first round of the $6.6 million Honda Classic on the east coast. He posted a 7-over-par round of 77, and heads into today's second round four strokes above the projected cut line of plus 3.

Ted took four bogeys on the front nine of the par 70 PGA National course for a 39, then made three birdies, one bogey and a double on the par-3 17th on the back to come home in 38. A par on 17 would have put him at 75, just two strokes above the cut line.

Tiger Woods suffered through one unfortunate hole, a par 5, batting it around from up close, and eventually settled for a double bogey 7. He still managed to shoot even-par 70, and is just four strokes behind leader Alex Noren's 66. There's a logjam at 67, which includes Justin Thomas and Seminole Daniel Berger. Tiger hit just 7 of 14 fairways and 10 of 18 greens, but his scrambling prowess is still very much in evidence. He made three birdies, all on par 4s, and his longest drive was measured at 346 yards.

None of the Gators was able to break par, with Matt Every and Brian Gay best at 3 over, right on the cut line. Billy Horschel is 4 over and Camilo Villegas 6 over. Of the 144 players in the field, just 20 broke par.
