Potter's Putter Deserts Him in Wyndham Championship Opener
Friday, August 14, 2020

Ted Potter put together a pair of 35s for an even-par 70 at the $6.4 million Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N. C. yesterday, and sits just outside the projected cut line in an unfinished  round due to inclement weather. There are three sitting atop the leader board at 8 under par - Harold Varner III, Tom Hoge and Roger Sloan, but there are still many who have yet to complete the round.

Last year, Ted dropped into a tie for 60th after his first-round 6-under-par 64 had him just two strokes off the pace. And if he had putted yesterday with the accuracy he displayed in last year's opener, he wouldn't be in this position of possibly missing the cut this evening unless he revs it up in the second round at the Sedgefield Country Club.

After beginning with pars on 10 and 11 yesterday, Ted birdied the par-3 12th hole by canning a putt of 11 feet, 3 inches. Then, his putter deserted him. He missed a birdie putt of 6'9" on No. 13, a par putt of 3'10" on No. 14, a birdie putt of 6'3" on No. 15, a birdie putt of 5'8" on No. 17, a birdie putt of 8'4" on No. 4, and a birdie putt of 7'0" on No. 6. That's six highly-makeable possibilities, any combination of which would have brought him closer to the lead and not in danger of heading home for the weekend. As it is, at even par he'll need a round of 2 under or 1 under today, depending on which number the cut line falls.

Harris English is all alone in fourth at 6-under-64, followed by a group of eight at 5 under, which includes Patrick Reed and Seminole Hank Lebioda, who still has two holes to play. The other Seminole, Brooks Koepka, is tied for 123rd with a 2-over 72.

Billy Horschel is best of the Gators with 4-under 66, tied for 13th; while Matt Every's 68 is tied for 43rd, and Brian Gay is 2 over with two to play. The defending champ, J. T. Poston, who won at 22 under last year, shot 4-over 74 and will have trouble getting to the weekend.
