Potter's Number of the Day Is 13 at Sony Open
Monday, January 14, 2019

What's the difference between making a par or taking a triple bogey? Ted Potter found out yesterday when a deadly triple on the 13th hole at the Sony Open in Hawaii caused him to finish in a tie for 13th at 13 under par, instead of a tie for seventh at 16 under. The difference? About $90,000.

Ted rebounded from the disaster at 13 with birdies at 17 ( putt of 18 feet, 5 inches) and 18 (22 feet, 4 inches) and finished at 267 after his final-round 68. It could have been three straight birds to close out the round but he missed his putt on 16 after leaving his second just 7 feet, 8 inches from the hole. He wound up nine strokes behind winner Matt Kuchar, who was never threatened on Sunday, posting a 4-under 66 to hold everyone at bay at 22 under. Andrew Putnam played well and finished second at 18 under.

Ted earned $123,733 for his 13th-place finish and his earnings for the season jumped to $387,857. He moved from 69th to 53rd on the PGA Tour money list, while his 156 FedEx Cup points moved him from 76th to 55th on that list. After two weeks in Hawaii, one of them spent with his wife, Cheri, he'll take a well-deserved week off.

Gator Brian Gay tied for 22nd at 10 under after a closing 66, and Seminole Hank Lebioda made his second cut since joining the tour as a rookie, finishing tied for 43rd at 7 under 273. Dominic Bozzelli, who spent a week at Golden Hills at the home of hosts Eric and Carrie Casey during the FSGA event a few years back, tied for 33rd at 8-under-par 272.
