After missing the cut in his first two events of the new season, Ted Potter used the par-5s to his advantage to post a 1-under-70 in the first round of the Shriner's Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. He'll have a little work to do today to make that first cut since the early projected line has fluctuated at 2 to 3 under.
Ted made three birdies and three bogeys on the front side for an even-par 35, and two birdies and one bogey on the back for another 35. There are three par 5s on the par-71 course and he birdied all three. He's tied for 85th.
Nick Taylor took the first-round lead with an 8-under 63, one stroke better than Brian Harman. There are five tied at 6-under 65, including Phil Mickelson and Gator Brian Gay. Seminole Brooks Koepka shot 1-under 70, while Daniel Berger is tied for eighth after a 5-under 66. Koepka's younger brother, Chase, also shot 66.
Gator Matt Every is another at 1-under 70.
