Monday, January 7, 2019

From Maui, Ted Potter makes the short hop to Honolulu this week for the Sony Open in Hawaii, with a check for $68,250 in the till. That's what he earned yesterday after posting a final-round, 1-under-par 72 in the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Ted finished with 75-73-71-72-291, 1 under over the par-73 Plantation Course at Kapalua. He tied for 27th in the 33-man field that featured only players who won PGA Tour events in 2018. Ted has collected $264,124 in the five events he's played since the wrap-around season began. After missing the cut at the Safeway Open, he has now made four straight and is 26 under par over the 16 rounds. He earned 30 FedEx Cup points and with 99, is in 76th place in that category. He's also in 69th place on the PGA money list.

Xander Schauffele came from out of the clouds to win Sunday, putting up a sensational 11-under-par 62 to finish at 23 under. Gary Woodland finished one stroke behind after leading from the start and appeared to be headed for an easy victory, especially after adding a 5-under 68 on Sunday to get it to 22 under. Justin Thomas was third at 18 under.

Joining Ted at the $6.4 million Sony, to be played at the Waialae Country Club, will be defending champ Patton Kizzire and many other holdovers from the Sentry. Newcomers include Gator Brian Gay, Jimmy Walker, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Brandt Snedeker, Hideki Matsuyama, Zach Johnson, Emiliano Grillo and from the Champions Tour, Davis Love III, Kenny Perry, Vijay Singh and Jerry Kelly.
