Potter Tied for 25th at Rocket Mortgage Classic
Friday, July 3, 2020

Ted Potter's opening round in the Rocket Mortgage Classic looked more like a Tale of Two Cities than an 18-hole golf effort.

With several 7-under-par 65s already sitting on the leaderboard posted by the early-morning players at the Detroit Golf Club, Ted began on the back nine and went after the leaders spurred on by a red-hot putter. He made a birdie on No. 10, then sank a putt of 8'6" on No. 13 to move to two under. After a great second shot on No. 16, Ted made it from 3'11" and continued moving toward the top. He added another birdie on 17 after a 50-foot bunker shot left him just 3'1" from the hole, and completed a 5-under-par 31 by hitting a 170-yard iron 11 feet from the hole on 18, and canning it.

It was a different story after Ted made the turn. An errant tee shot on No.1 led to his first bogey, and he added another on the par-3 fifth to drop back to 3 under. He had a chance to get back to four on No. 7, but he missed a birdie putt of 4'1". Another excellent tee shot on the par-3 ninth - to within 5'7" - led to a birdie and a round of 4-under 68. That hole - both strokes - was the only time all day the TV viewers got to see Ted. He wound up tied for 25th.

Doc Redman, Scott Stallings and Kevin Kisner are the leaders at 7 under, and there are seven tied one stroke behind, including Bryson DeChambeau, who bombed unreal tee shots all day to the delight of the TV audience, and especially the announcing crew.
