Potter Rallies On Final 2 Holes; Ties for 7th in Puerto Rico
Monday, March 1, 2021

Ted Potter closed with a rush at the Puerto Rico Open yesterday, finishing with birdies on 17 and 18 and winding up in a tie for seventh. That resulted in a hefty check for $91,125, his biggest payday during the wrap-around season, and boosted his total to $187,127.

Ted began the day at 11 under par and made two birdies on the front nine and turned in 34 on the Grand Reserve Country Club course. At the time 13 under, he was still in the hunt to win it.

A bogey on No. 10 set him back to 12 under, and he parred the next six holes to remain there. Then Ted birdied the 17th, and canned a five-footer for birdie on 18 to complete his best finish of the season. He tied for seventh at 14 under with Central Floridian Rob Oppenheim, Brandon Wu and Cameron Percy.

The ever-changing leader board continued, and Branden Grace wound up at 19 under, winning by one stroke over Jhonattan Vegas and three over Grayson Murray and Rafael Campos, who were only able to muster up 2-under 70's on Sunday. Grace closed with 66 and Vegas 65 to overtake them both.

SEMINOLE, GATOR FALL SHORT - The atempts by Brooks Koepka and Billy Horschel for a fourth PGA Tour victory this year by one of the Florida schools fell short yesterday at the WGC-Workday Championship in Bradenton.

Both ex-Floridian collegiate stars shot 2-under-par 70's Sunday and finished tied for second with Viktor Hovland, three strokes behind Collin Morikawa. Thus far this season, Seminoles Koepka and Daniel Berger have won tournaments, along with Gator Brian Gay.

Morikawa didn't have to do much in the final two hours to gain the victory. He made eight pars on the back nine, and a birdie on No. 12 for a final 69, and was never seriously threatened. Hovland made a good move with a 5-under 67, but at 10 under starting the round, it was a case of too little, too late.

The other Seminole looking to get the collegians victory No. 4 this season was Berger, but he finished tied for 35th at 3 under after a final 72.

Lowest round of the day was turned in by Carlos Ortiz, but his 66 only got him into a tie for 15th at 8 under. Dustin Johnson, who opened with 77, closed with 78 and tied for 54th at 5 over.

HEADING FOR OCALA - Nelly Korda won the Gainsbridge LPGA in Orlando by three strokes over Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko yesterday and all three will drive up the road for the LPGA Drive On Championship beginning Thursday at Golden Ocala.

The $1.5 million event marks a return to town since the ill-fated (but highly successful) Coates Championship in 2014 and 2015. There are currently 120 players entered, including the top finishers from the Gainsbridge - Korda, Thompson, Ko, Jin Young Ko, Sarah Kemp, Patty Tavatanakit, Angel Yin, Jenny Shin, Sophia Popov, Stacy Lewis, In Gee Chun and Chella Choi.
