Potter Posts 74 in U. S. Open First Round
Friday, June 16, 2017

Ted Potter got off to another slow start at the U. S. Open yesterday, going 4 over par after eight holes on the back nine, which included a double-bogey seven on the par-5 15th. A saving birdie at 18 put him at 3-over 39 over the long and tough Erin Hills layout.

But Ted bounced back somewhat on the front nine, making birdies at 4 and 9, plus a lone bogey on 6, and he came home in 1-under 35. His 2-over 74 left him in a tie for 82nd place, one off the early projected cut line of 1 over par. He tees off today at 12:30 Wisconsin time in the company of Whee Kim and Daniel Chopra.

Rickie Fowler enjoyed a bogey-free round of 65 with seven birdies, and he has a two-stroke lead over Seminole Brooks Koepka, Brian Harman and Tommy Fleetwood. Seminole Jack Maguire, just 22, is tied for 19th at 2 under, and Gator Tyson Alexander of Gainesville, who, like Ted made it into the Open through a Monday qualifier last week, was at 1-under 71. Gator Billy Horschel shot himself out with 7-over 79.

Jordan Spieth was on the cut line at 73, while Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott were at 2 over, with Dustin Johnson another stroke behind. Jason Day knocked himself out of contention with two triples courtesy of the two-foot high fescue that they are calling the rough.
