Potter Opens With 76 at Riviera
Friday, February 16, 2018

Ted Potter was unable to keep it going at the Genesis Open yesterday after his stunning victory Sunday in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Ted opened with a birdie on the par-5 first hole but it was all downhill after that. He finished with five bogeys, one double and just two birdies for a 5-over-par 76 over the par-71 Riviera Country Club course. That left him way down the list, tied for 130th.

The big names were nowhere near the top of the leaderboard, which saw Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau leading at 5-under 66. Chez Reavie was best of the players who have been hot lately, with a 3-under 68. Justin Thomas was at 2-under 69, Phil Mickelson at 1-under 70, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth at even-par 71 and Dustin Johnson at 3-over 74.

Tiger Woods also began with a birdie but he mostly stumbled around after that, missing fairways and greens, yet using his superior short game to fashion a 1-over-par 72. Tiger made five birdies, four bogeys and one double where his tee shot rocketed into a gum tree and never fell to the ground. He's tied for 63rd, so a little better performance today will ensure he's around for the weekend.

Billy Horschel was best of the Gators with an even-par 71, followed by Matt Every (72), Brian Gay (74) and Camilo Villegas (76). Seminole Daniel Berger was at 4-over 75, and Brooks Koepka has yet to be seen.

Dominic Bozzelli, who stayed at the home of Eric and Carrie Casey at Golden Hills when the FSGA held an event at the course several years ago, is right in the hunt after an opening 67. Eric and Dominic have been in constant contact since the FSGA event.
