Potter Makes Enough Birdies in Hawaii, Adds Too Many Bogeys
Saturday, January 16, 2021

For the second day in a row, Ted Potter got off to a poor start at the Sony Open in Hawaii yesterday and he was never able to recover. Ted added a 1-over-par 71 to his opening round of 2-under-68 and wound up at 1-under 139, missing the cut by three strokes in the $6.6 million event being played in Honolulu

After making par at No. 10, Ted took a double bogey on the par-3 11th and was playing catch-up the rest of the way, unsuccessfully. He was able to get it back to even par on the front nine, but bogeys on 1 and 2 meant he needed four birdies and no bogeys on the final seven holes, and he wasn't up to the task. In the up and down round, Ted made six birdies, enough to make the cut easily, but not with adding five bogeys and the double.

Nick Taylor leads the way at 12 under after a Friday 62, and there are five tied for second at 10 under: 47-year-old Stewart Cink (67-63); Webb Simpson (65-65); Russell Henley (66-64); soon-to-be 45 Vaughan Taylor (64-66) and Chris Kirk (65-65).

There's a logjam of eight tied at 9 under, including Gator Billy Horschel (65-66-131). Of the other Gators, Brian Gay snuck in on the cut line at 4 under with 67-69, while Matt Every missed the cut with 67-74. Seminole Daniel Berger continued his stellar play and is tied for 15th with 64-68-132, 8 under. Seminole Hank Lebioda will also be heading home after posting 72-67-139.

Two of the elders made the cut, Mike Weir at 6 under and Jerry Kelly at 4 under. Vijay Singh (+2) and Davis Love III (+3) are also gone, although the latter was seen wading in the water and fishing just off the course after his round.
