Potter Heads Into Sony Finale in Tie for Fifth
Sunday, January 13, 2019

Ted Potter's chance for a $200,000-plus payday this evening remained in play after his 2-under-par round of 68 yesterday kept him in a tie for fifth at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Ted missed a birdie putt of 7 feet, 10 inches after blasting out of a trap on the par-5 18th hole which would have put him in fifth place by himself at 12 under par. By missing the putt, he's tied with 10 others at 11 under and the difference in all their checks with that many in the deadlock would be substantial.

At 11 under, the group that also includes Bryson DeChambeau, Davis Love III, Charles Howell III, Marc Leishman and Dominic Bozzelli, is seven strokes behind leader Matt Kuchar, who tacked on a 66 to his earlier pair of 63s for a 54-hole total of 192, 18 under par. Kuchar has a two-stroke lead over Andrew Putnam, and four over Chez Reavie and Keith Mitchell, who shot 63 yesterday.

There was a second cut after the round and it came at 2 under par, with 10 more players at 209 or worse heading for the sidelines in the MDF category. They won't get to finish, but all will receive a check.

Ted tees off in today's finale at 11:50 Hawaii time, which is 4:50 here. He goes off the first tee with Hudson Swafford and Brian Stuard, who are also 11 under.

Gator Brian Gay is still around at 6-under 204, tied for 40th, as is Seminole rookie Hank Lebiodo, who is tied for 48th at 5-under 205.
