Potter Finishes 2nd in Rust-Oleum Championship
Monday, June 12, 2017

Ted Potter virtually ensured himself re-entry to the PGA Tour in the fall with a second-place finish in the $600,000 Rust-Oleum Championship in Ivanhoe, Illinois yesterday. Ted closed with a 3-under-par 69 for a 72-hole total of 276, 12 under and just two strokes behind red-hot winner Stephan Jaeger.

Ted earned $64,800 to bring his total for the season to $177,882, and he jumped from 14th place on the Web.com money list to fourth. It usually takes about $150,000 to finish in "the 25," the group that graduates to the PGA tour. And, there are still 11 events remaining on the Web.com schedule before the last four $1 million events, called "the Finals," after which 25 more players can graduate.

Ted began the final round at 9 under par, four behind Jaeger and tied for second place. Playing in the next-to-last group in front of Jaeger, Ted came out of the gate with a burst, making birdies on the first, second and fifth holes until stalling with a bogey on No. 7. But he birdied the ninth to get it to 3 under again, turning in 33. At the time, Jaeger had played eight holes in 1 under, and his lead was down to two.

When Jaeger took a bogey on No. 9, the lead was cut to one, and it remained that way as both parred No. 10. Ted then parred 11, and Jaeger upped his lead to two again with a birdie. On 13, Ted hit his drive into a bunker and made bogey, and the lead went to three. He was never able to get closer than two the rest of the way, but it was a stellar performance.

While the Web.com Tour travels to Wichita, Kansas for the $625,000 Air Capital Classic, Ted will take the week off to tackle tough Erin Hills in the U. S. Open, secure in the knowledge that he'll be back in the big time again next season.

BERGER BEAUTY - It was a good day for FSU at the FedEx St. Jude Classic as Daniel Berger overcame a three-stroke deficit to defeat Whee Kim and Charl Schwartzel by one and collect the $1,152,000 winner's check, the former Seminole's second straight victory in the event. Berger closed with a pair of 66s, while third-round leader Rafa Cabrera Bello shot a final-round 71; he was the only player in the top nine who didn't break 70 on Sunday.

Gator Billy Horschel shot the best Sunday round of 64 for 8-under 272 and finished in a five-way tie for fourth, which included Cabrera Bello. They all collected $252,000. Seminole Brooks Koepka wound up at 1 under, banking $26,912, while Gator Matt Every was never able to follow up on his opening 64, finishing at 3-under 277 and earning $48,320.

Phil Mickelson had a shot to win it all, and was briefly tied for the lead, but a ball in the water on No. 12 and a subsequent triple bogey killed his chances. He finished at 7-under 273 and earned $198,400.
